Key Lime Inn in Key West Hotel

But despite the Biden administration’s urging and classified briefings to senators last week on the crucial role they say the spy program plays in protecting national security, a group of progressive and conservative lawmakers had refused to accept the version of the bill the House sent over earlier. Still, officials had said that court approval shouldn’t be a substitute for congressional authorization, especially since communications companies could cease cooperation with the government if the program is allowed to lapse. The House passed a bill to reauthorize and reform a government surveillance tool without including broad restrictions on the FBI’s use to search for Americans’ data. Before the law was set to expire, U.S. officials were already scrambling after two major U.S. communication providers said they would stop complying with orders through the surveillance program, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private negotiations.

“This reauthorization of Section 702 gives the United States the authority to continue to collect foreign intelligence information about non-U.S. Persons located outside the United States, while at the same time codifying important reforms the Justice Department has adopted to ensure the protection of Americans’ privacy and civil liberties,” Garland said in a statement Saturday. An adorable old-fashioned complex that's just what you need for a fuss-free, affordable stay, the Key Lime lets you choose your own style. You can stay in one of the rooms gathered around the modest swimming pool for a classic motel-style stay or you can pick a self-contained cottage arranged around the acre of well-maintained grounds. In the back of the property, its original estate home, 1854's Robert Maloney House, is where you'll find hotel-style bedrooms away from the admittedly mellow social scene by the pool. Although it's right off Truman Avenue, the grounds are green and the energy isn't impersonal or frenzied—you're far enough from Duval Street (about a 5-minute walk) to find peace, but near enough to find food and drink without struggling with a car.

The program permits the U.S. government to collect without a warrant the communications of non-Americans located outside the country to gather foreign intelligence. The reauthorization faced a long and bumpy road to final passage Friday after months of clashes between privacy advocates and national security hawks pushed consideration of the legislation to the brink of expiration. Our bar tender was courteous and friendly. The tvs are limited depending on what section is open.

The six amendments ultimately failed to garner the necessary support to be included in the final bill. Gen. Merrick Garland praised the reauthorization and reiterated how “indispensable” the tool is to the Justice Department. The legislation that was approved 60 to 34 with bipartisan support would extend for two years the program known as Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. President Biden on Saturday signed legislation reauthorizing a key U.S. surveillance law after divisions over whether the FBI should be restricted from using the program to search for Americans’ data nearly forced the statute to lapse. Our star system does not denote hotel amenities but it does denote the level of our approval. A place with one star is worth a look—after all, it made the list. A rating of two stars means it's excellent, and three stars is the highest praise we give.

Most of the rooms have either a queen or king bed and are done up in a pleasing but not overly plush Florida style—gentle pastels and Bahama-style shutters to shut out the heat. It's relaxing but not super high-end—the staff is cheerful and it cares, but it also steps back and lets you do your own thing—making it a good choice if the last thing you want is to be caught up in the city's heavy-handed overpriced luxury hotel scene. Happy Hour is Mon - Fri from 4pm-7pm in the bar area. Enjoy the outdoor waterfront dining and TIKI bar. But members on the House and Senate intelligence committees as well as the Justice Department warned that requiring a warrant would severely handicap officials from quickly responding to imminent national security threats. “If the government wants to spy on my private communications or the private communications of any American, they should be required to get approval from a judge, just as our Founding Fathers intended in writing the Constitution,” Durbin said.

Enjoy a night of dining and dancing under the stars. One of the major changes detractors had proposed centered on restricting the FBI’s access to information about Americans through the program. Though the surveillance tool targets only non-Americans in other countries, it also collects communications of Americans when they are in contact with those targeted foreigners. Sen. Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the No. 2 Democrat in the chamber, had been pushing a proposal that would require U.S. officials to get a warrant before accessing American communications.

The best Animal Crossing: New Horizon island ideas

animal crossing island design ideas

It’s important to hide the design until you really stumble across it. By doing custom tiles, you could put whatever animals they could design into the ‘pond’, which looks more detailed than just using the water terraforming tool. Just be careful if you’re reading tarot cards – don’t let an ominous Tower card ruin a perfectly good friendship. It’s the perfect spot to have a cup of tea and catch up with a friend on a rainy day, or curl up with a good book if you’re into that. It’s an adorable little setup, with a board for chopping open the tasty fruits to make them a sweet beachside drink. This would be a great place to enjoy snorkeling, catching bugs, and fishing with friends – or all by yourself.

Medieval Castle

If all this summer talk is getting you down, why not do the complete opposite and decorate your island with all things icy? It’ll be a great way to cool down while the sun’s beating down on you in real life. For those of you who still play Pocket Camp, why not bring the joys of Camp to your New Horizons island?

List of Islands and Island Layouts

Get the sports equipment out, find a beach ball, and dress in your best sporty outfit. Camp is always better with friends, so fill up your village with a mixture of Peppy, Jock, or Sisterly characters. You can go fishing, tell stories around the Campfire, or take turns chasing down Wisp’s ghost pieces. By unlocking the Island Designer app, you can create your own diagonal heart-shaped ponds easily. The lake found on the island has a randomized pattern, allowing for islands with a lake in the shape of a heart, islands with a ribbon pattern, and more. However, with the huge roster of villagers in this game, it is pretty tough to reroll until getting the one you want.

Outdoor Cafe

This laundrette once again makes the most of Simple Panels as both dividers and machine facades and thankfully has plenty of reading material. Surrounding it with pretty flowers and bushes adds a Studio Ghibli-esque feel to it, and makes an already-cool feature look even better. We’ve all got a lighthouse on our Animal Crossing island, right? Something needs to help guide the ships (unless you’re Gulliver, there’s no helping him), and in any case, it just looks neat. Especially if you add benches for visitors to sit and wind down in, and a record player with some calming music.

The color scheme, items, and dresses all blend together gorgeously – and look perfect against the custom backdrop. So if your island is in desperate need of some tender loving care, have no fear – we’ve got the best Animal Crossing island ideas for you and the summertime right here. Of course, you don’t have to jump on the summer bandwagon, but trust us, there are some great ideas out there.

Why can’t I build a plot in Manor Lords?

And it’s always so fun to see the villagers stroll by and inspect things. This adorable little roadside flower shop is a great addition to your city or village street. Go bug catching or take photos with friends, it’s all fun here. Go for a nice stroll on a sunny day, or hop over puddles on a rainy one as you go to view the fish, flowers, and of course, the pagoda.

It represents a significant advancement in series customization as you get to plan your island layout. This player combined both idea with great success by using items like the iron garden dining set, some customized stalls, and plenty of plants. Just because you have a natural looking forestcore-themed island, doesn’t mean you’re all done with building. And we’ve shared a ton of mermaid-themed ideas already, perfect to match with this build. Palm trees add some greenery, and beach items like a ball and sandcastle, surfboards, and shower stalls are also great additions. So, there you have it, our favorite Animal Crossing island ideas in New Horizons.

For example, players used customized designs on umbrellas to make GameCubes, gift boxes, bookshelves, and trash bins. Players also set custom design pathing, to fake the appearance of islands floating in the sky. Other tricks involve repurposing items to create a desired look, like using silos to create the look of castle ramparts.

Just be prepared for images of a very small pink frog to appear too. Remember when we couldn’t move last year for petals and log furniture as everyone transformed their islands into cottagecore paradises? @Seaburd on Twitter has coined her dilapidated creations ‘Abandonedcore’ and we’re getting a distinct The Last of Us feel from her shots.

A bubbling waterfall adds some nice scenery to the area in this build, and custom stone paths are a great way to add some individuality. This super creative player used custom panels to create their humble home into a whole castle. Give yourself an adorable tiki bar with the items from this line, as well as a custom designed stall, some plants, and some stones and pavers. Rock your canyon path to your secret beach, which may or may not be where Redd docks his super legal boat, depending on the layout of your island.

These decorating ideas will require terraforming, paths, using different furniture and natural landscaping. Forced perspective is an optical trick that creates the illusion of a longer draw distance. It lets players create shots like the one above, where the Statue of Liberty appears to be far away. (I’m especially partial to using the Kerokerokeroppi Bridge, from the Sanrio collection, which basically looks like a miniature of the game’s actual Zen Bridge).

Although there isn’t much land, it’s worth it for the temple-like construction of the museum. The houses are also placed in a unique way that’s different than your usual side-by-side layout. Parks are also a nice addition to your island and can be enclosed using fencing too. If you’ve been following the daily walkthrough, then you’ll have already tried your hand at making a park. Perhaps you could design a new one with a new theme and aesthetic. Japanese style parks are very popular in the Animal Crossing community as there are lots of bamboo DIYs and Japanese style furniture and infrastructure.

The best part of the map is the two little neighborhoods on each side of the island. I’m a big fan of putting villagers close together to make it feel more like a close community. The main takeaway from this map is that it looks more like your traditional city builder, even a little like Sim City 1. This garden design is the perfect place to meditate after a long day. Then add some cute flowers around the area, a picnic basket, and tie it all together by adding a Kid’s tent for those ultimate relaxing vibes. This Zen garden is accentuated by mossy stone custom designs and flowerbeds.

Beyond The Buffet: How Do Cruise Ships Get Rid Of Human Waste?

what do cruise ships do with sewage

And many cruise ships lack the sewage treatment facilities to adequately filter out toxins. Both the EPA and the USCG say they do not tally the amount of waste disposed by cruise ships. It’s illegal according to U.S. and international maritime law, but many companies have proven they don’t care, and have been caught illegally spewing plastic into the sea. Carnival Cruise Lines was found dumping food mixed with plastic waste into the waters of the Bahamas.

What is grey water?

Now, she helps over 1 million people per month to plan their perfect cruise holidays. Beyond wastage, cruise lines are also looking at other environmentally-friendly technologies that could be better for the environment and either be more profitable in future, or ensure that people are still happy to cruise. Fuel technology advancements, such as Royal Caribbean’s investment in biofuel, is one of the prominent areas of research.

If this state-level activity were to increase, Congress could see a need to develop federal legislation that would harmonize differences in the states' approaches. The VGP applies to pollutant discharges incidental to the normal operation from non-recreational vessels that are 79 feet or more in length, and to ballast water discharges from commercial vessels of less than 79 feet and commercial fishing vessels of any length. Geographically, it applies to discharges into waters of the United States in all states and territories, extending to the reach of the 3-mile territorial limit.

Other State Activities

The best thing to do is to treat sewage and release it in the deep ocean (paywall). If released near coasts, untreated sewage can contaminate seafood, kill marine animals, and sicken swimmers. The cruise industry is a significant and growing contributor to the U.S. economy, providing more than $32 billion in benefits annually and generating more than 330,000 U.S. jobs, but also making the environmental impacts of its activities an issue to many. One fisherman, Mark Severson, recalls in the summer of 2019 sailing through miles of foamy yellow waters in Petersburg, a small island community about 30 miles from the Canadian border and a popular port along the Alaska cruise route. Since then, Severson and his wife, Karen, have been advocating for stronger monitoring of waste dumping on cruise ships.

Cruise Ship Waste Streams

Once the sewage has been completely processed, it will enter a storage tank until it can be disposed of, either on land or released into the sea at a safe distance from the shore. At this stage, all solid materials will eventually be removed from the sewage, once they have been passed through the first three steps multiple times. The solid matter will be a lot lower in volume than when it first entered the plant, and it will now be incinerated in a low-emission incinerator, minimising the release of harmful chemicals. It may also be stored until it can be disposed of properly when the ship returns to port.

In next week’s post, you can find out how the laundry rooms, the housekeeping, and the kitchens operate aboard a cruise ship. In the reverse osmosis process, a pump pressurizes the seawater and forces its molecules through a semi-permeable membrane. Most dissolved salts, organic compounds, bacteria and suspended solids are larger than the mesh of the membrane and are unable to pass through. “The passengers that love the Alaska cruise do not even realise that the ships are polluting our pristine parts of the world,” he says. Before you take a cruise, consider green travel options instead — or take a look at Friends of the Earth’s Cruise Ship Report Card to see which cruise lines you should adamantly avoid.

Do Cruise Ships Reuse Waste Water?

In the alternative purification process, the H2O is evaporated from the seawater in specially designed evaporators, such as the Wärtsilä Serck Como multi-stage flash (MSF) evaporators in the picture below. Heat from the engine’s cooling water (75-95 ° C) is typically used as a source of heat for the evaporation process. The resulting condensate is then processed depending on the intended use.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dump Their Waste?

This leaves clean, safe and bacteria-free water, which is transferred to a storage tank until it can be discharged. When black water enters the integrated treatment system, it first passes into a bioreactor ‘aeration chamber’ which is filled with bacteria that break down organic contaminants dissolved in the wastewater. If you have been on a cruise ship, you have noticed there is always plenty of uneaten food.

Yes RCCL has been caught and paid a fine of something like $6,000,000,.00. When you get to port you'll see a few big pipes attached to the ship, some are for fuel and the other(s) are for this. The ship has an incinerator, as well as a compactor for processing plastic waste.

Lying on a busy route for cruise ships, the park holds some of the largest rookeries of Steller sea lions in the world. Each spring, more than 1 million seabirds – including 90% of Canada’s tufted puffins and half of the world’s Cassin’s auklets – breed on the island’s cliffs. From the comfort of cruise ships, a typical trip to Alaska offers magnificent views of glaciers and untamed national parks, and visits to quaint seaside towns. For years, these draws have made cruises to Alaska the most booked US holiday.

This report describes the several types of waste streams that cruise ships may discharge and emit. It identifies the complex body of international and domestic laws that address pollution from cruise ships. It then describes federal and state legislative activity concerning cruise ships in Alaskan waters and activities in a few other states, as well as current industry initiatives to manage cruise ship pollution. More than a billion gallons of sewage are dumped into the ocean annually. This sewage is not only full of human waste, but also chemicals, pharmaceuticals, bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and hazardous waste.

More than 90 percent of those surveyed support a requirement for cruise ships to upgrade their onboard waste treatment facilities to more fully treat sewage before it is released into the sea. Cruise ships are equipped with water treatment systems that clean the human waste (black water) and grey water (water that goes down the sinks and showers), before it gets treated and combined and released back into the ocean. By the time this water is released back into the ocean, it has been cleaned enough to be safe for dumping into the ocean. Once fully treated, this type of non-sewage wastewater can be discharged into some regions of the ocean.

White Pass scenic railway tickets can be purchased directly at the station, but the company recommends buying through your cruise line so that transportation to and from your ship can be arranged. Most passengers on a shore excursion will begin their journey with a bus trip to the station in Fraser, British Columbia and head about 28 miles south into Skagway (or reverse). Guides and eventually the conductor will come through to say hello, check tickets and sell souvenirs, such as DVDs, hats and photo books. Guides narrate during the trip, providing valuable tidbits of information about each point of interest the train passes on the mountain. If you enjoy the experience, it's appropriate to tip a few dollars to your car's guide or to tip a larger amount to the conductor, who will divide it among all the staff.

Denali National Park came to be as Mount McKinley National Park way back in 1917, and since then, the park expanded and now encompasses over six million acres of preserved Alaskan nature. “Denali” means “the Tall One” in the language of the indigenous Athabaskan population who lived there long before 19th century settlers came out west. This name references the sweeping summit of Denali Mountain within the park. GM reveals Ultra Cruise hands-free system that covers 95 percent of driving scenarios

In fact, it will launch covering more than 2 million miles of paved roads, including city and subdivision streets, paved rural roads and highways. Super Cruise was first released way back in 2017 on the then-new Cadillac CT6 gasoline-powered luxury sedan. It has long been classified as a "Level 2" type of semi-autonomous technology, a driver assistance aid above purely human operation.

GM reveals Ultra Cruise ‘hands-free’ system that covers ‘95 percent’ of driving scenarios

GM’s Chief Engineer, Jason Ditman, revealed the company’s strategic approach to ensuring a seamless and secure operation of Ultra Cruise. With a comprehensive array of over 20 sensors, including LiDAR, radars, and cameras, the cutting-edge technology offers unparalleled control and awareness of driving situations, further bolstering drivers’ confidence in the system. Previously, GM outlined several of the sensors that will power the driver-assist system, including cameras, short- and long-range radar, and a lidar sensor. GM has said its vehicles will come with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon Ride Platform to process all that sensor data. The destination-to-destination hands-free system will use more than just cameras to “see” the world. These systems work together through “sensor fusion” to provide Ultra Cruise with a confident, 360-degree, three-dimensional representation of the vehicle’s surroundings.

Cadillac Celestiq

The keen focus on safe deployment means we may not see exactly what Ultra Cruise can do for some time. All that said, the Cadillac Celestiq will arrive with all the necessary hardware and software required to operate Ultra Cruise whenever GM feels it is safe. Notably, that’s different from the Level 3 systems that Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Ford currently have under development.

You can power your home for 21 days with a Chevy Silverado EV and GM’s new bidirectional charger

The automaker had two different teams working on two different solutions, this source said, and since Ultra Cruise was designed to be just a "more capable" Level 2 system, it made sense internally to combine them. Ultimately, what GM may end up doing is offering higher and better "levels" of Super Cruise as new, more automated vehicles roll out. “We are not walking away from the capability, taking the money and moving to a different program," the source indicated.

1Ultra Cruise Advanced Driver Assistance Technology functionality is currently in preproduction and subject to change. Capability will evolve over time by way of over-the-air updates once functionality becomes available. 2Safety or driver-assistance features are no substitute for the driver’s responsibility to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. The driver should remain attentive to traffic, surroundings and road conditions at all times. Read the vehicle Owner’s Manual for more important feature limitations and information.

‘Ultra Cruise eventually can be used on every paved road in the US and Canada’

Ultra Cruise is powered by a 5-nanometer, scalable compute architecture future-proofed through the Ultifi software platform and Vehicle Intelligence Platform. Ultra Cruise can add features, functions and services over time through frequent over-the-air updates. GM’s two hands-free advanced driver-assist systems will coexist in the company’s lineup with Super Cruise available on more mainstream vehicles and Ultra Cruise reserved for premium entries. Ultra Cruise builds upon the capabilities of Super Cruise and allows the company to offer Super Cruise on more mainstream vehicles and reserve Ultra Cruise capabilities for premium entries. Due to fact that the driver must remain engaged at all times, GM states the Ultra Cruise ADAS was architected as a Level 2 autonomous driving suite.

GM will be the first company to use the Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Ride™ Platform for advanced driver assistance technology, which features an industry-leading 5-nanometer  Snapdragon™ SA8540P SoC and SA9000P artificial intelligence accelerator. Before we dig into the new details of Ultra Cruise, we should start with GM’s ADAS predecessor, Super Cruise. Super Cruise is a hands-free driver assistance feature introduced years ago that uses adaptive cruise control technology and connected services in each GM branded vehicle to navigate LiDAR-enabled map data using real-time positioning, cameras, and sensors.

GM’s first-generation advanced driver-assist system (ADAS), Super Cruise, has been praised as a safer, more capable version of Tesla’s Autopilot, thanks to its camera-based driver monitoring system that ensures drivers keep their eyes on the road. GM says Super Cruise will “co-exist” with Ultra Cruise, with the former available in more “mainstream” vehicles, while the latter is reserved for GM’s luxury models. GM wouldn’t comment on the price customers will be expected to pay to add Ultra Cruise as an option on their vehicles.

GM’s Cruise robotaxis are back in Phoenix — but people are driving them

With a Level 3 system, a driver could theoretically take their eyes off the road under certain circumstances, like low-speed stop-and-go traffic. A key component of Ultra Cruise is its Human Machine Interface, through which the system presents information to the driver and communicates when they need to be in control of the vehicle. Building on the HMI currently used in Super Cruise, Ultra Cruise’s HMI also shows drivers that they and the system are seeing the same thing. Smart diagnostic and learning systems automatically identify scenarios where Ultra Cruise needs upgrading, triggering data recordings in vehicles equipped with the service.

GM’s Ultra Cruise sensor strategy is directly guided by the company’s philosophy of safely deploying advanced driver assistance (ADAS) technologies. Over time, GM expects that customers will be able to travel truly hands-free with Ultra Cruise across nearly every paved public road in the U.S. and Canada, including city streets, subdivision streets and rural roads, in addition to highways. Vehicles equipped with Ultra Cruise hardware will experience incremental enhancements through over-the-air software updates. DETROIT  – GM announced this week that its next-generation hands-free driver assist system, Ultra Cruise, will be powered by a scalable compute architecture featuring system-on-chips developed by American semiconductor company Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

But as lidar costs fall, other automakers have embraced the hardware for its ability to render a 3D map of its environment and all nearby objects. In addition to GM, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz have recently announced their intention to include lidar in future production vehicles. And as Ditman put it, the decision to include lidar is less about money and more about safety. The federal government is paying more attention to ADAS, recently announcing that automakers would be required to report incidents involving driver assistance and autonomous systems within one day of learning of a crash. Notably, Alphabet’s Waymo abandoned its plans to develop a Level 2 ADAS after determining that a fully autonomous system would be far safer. And certain automakers’ advanced driver-assistance systems often fail when driving into sharper curves, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Super Cruise’s Driver Attention Camera system will be carried over to Ultra Cruise. By Andrew J. She’s never claimed to be good with numbers but can readily find the right words to describe money matters like budgets, investments and understanding credit.

And those actions can create a domino effect that has the potential to be dangerous — perhaps even fatal. Now we’re getting more of a glimpse — albeit an extremely limited one — into the types of sensors and hardware that will be included in these Ultra Cruise-equipped vehicles. GM has said that the bespoke ultra-luxury Cadillac Celestiq would be one of the first vehicles to come with Ultra Cruise — but that vehicle isn’t expected to go into production until early 2024.

Automatic Lane Change and Lane Change on Demand are not available while trailering. Dubbed Ultra Cruise, the new system uses sensors like cameras, radars, and lidar to control a vehicle’s steering, acceleration, and braking. GM says the system can be used on 2 million miles of paved roads and in “95 percent” of driving scenarios. Though which vehicles will get Ultra Cruise is still a mystery; GM says it will be available in a handful of premium vehicles in 2023, though the automaker wouldn’t disclose specific models. The Celestiq will kick off GM’s lineup of premium EV offerings that will all come equipped with its new sensor suite and applicable software, but which model will follow the Cadillac remains a secret.

Over the past few years, GM has upgraded Super Cruise as it spread to a variety of other gas and electric models, including the Chevrolet Bolt, Cadillac Escalade and Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV and many more. The latest version of Super Cruise includes features like automatic lane-changing, and is widely regarded as one of the better ADAS technologies on the market. GM’s fundamental strategy for all ADAS features, including Ultra Cruise, is safely deploying these technologies. A deep knowledge of what Ultra Cruise is capable of, along with the detailed picture provided by its sensors, will help us understand when Ultra Cruise can be engaged and when to hand control back to the driver. We believe consistent, clear operation can help build drivers’ confidence in Ultra Cruise. "GM is not scaling back its advanced driver assistance (ADAS) programs," GM spokesperson Aimee Ridella told InsideEVs today.

Ditman told us that component-level testing is underway and all sensors are in the final stages of validation. GM vehicles equipped with Ultra Cruise prototype software are currently being tested at the automaker’s proving grounds in Milford, Michigan, while off-property testing is underway with drivers remaining in control of the steering. GM will be the first company to use the Qualcomm Technologies’ Snapdragon Ride™ Platform for advanced driver assistance technology, which features an industry-leading 5-nanometer Snapdragon™ SA8540P SoC and SA9000P artificial intelligence accelerator. GM’s all-new, advanced driver-assistance technology, Ultra Cruise, will ultimately make hands-free travel across most of the U.S. and Canada possible.
